History
Our Mission & History
For more than four decades, the Sarasota Farmers Market has brought farmers, local businesses, residents, and visitors together in the heart of Downtown Sarasota.
Where It All Began
The Sarasota Farmers Market was founded in 1979 by Paul Thorpe and the Downtown Merchants Association with a simple goal: bring people downtown and strengthen the heart of Sarasota.
A Community-Focused Organization
In 2009, Market vendors formed a not-for-profit organization to further strengthen the Market's mission, with an increased focus on local farmers and growers, support for nonprofit organizations, and educational opportunities for the community.
A Sarasota Tradition
Today, the Sarasota Farmers Market proudly connects our community with local farmers, growers, artisans, chefs, and small businesses. The Market is open every Saturday, rain or shine, 52 weeks a year, from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
Mission
Sarasota Farmers Market Vendors Incorporated (SFMV) is a not-for-profit organization established under the laws of the State of Florida, continuing a 40+ year tradition of enhancing and improving the quality of life in Sarasota.
Our charitable mission is to create a welcoming social environment where residents and visitors can gather and interact, bring foot traffic to Downtown Sarasota to support its economic vitality, and provide opportunities for nonprofit organizations serving our community.
Education is also central to our mission. We strive to connect consumers with the knowledge, products, and services of local farmers, businesses, growers, and artisans.
